Because He First Loved Me

Because He First Loved Me

I love being a dad. My son, Judah (2), is a BLAST! Cars, trucks, books, dancing, bugs, singing (ish), and so many more activities fill our days and leave me exhausted and happy.

One of the best things about having a child is seeing the heart of God in new ways. God has spoken to me so many times through experiences with my son, I am just blown away.

The other night my wife and I were getting Judah ready for bed. After we brushed his teeth (Judah likes the spitting part), put his PJs on, and said prayers I decided I just wanted to hold him for a bit. I love spending time with that kid (Our heavenly father has that same thought, you know).

As I was sitting and rocking him I said "I love you, Judah" to which he replied "I love you, daddy" Now, as adorable as that is, Judah doesn't really know what love is. Except for what he has seen and experienced. Love is learned.

The old sunday school song came to mind in that moment;

Oh how I love Jesus
Oh how I love Jesus
Oh how I love Jesus
Because he first loved me

We love because he loved us first. And the truth is, I don't really know that much more about love than my two-year-old. In fact, I may actually know less about love than Judah because he has less religion and fewer scars on him. The more I learn and grow, the more I realize how little I know.

Apart from God, there is no love. God is love, so all love originates from him. And just as Judah is learning how to love from me (scary), I am learning how to love from my heavenly father.

In worship this is the starting point. When we lose sight of this truth, we begin to head down the wrong path. I desire my worship to come from a place of authentically growing deeper in the love of Christ Jesus. Outside of that I will only fail as a leader.

"We love because He first loved us." 1 John 4:19
