God is Not Waiting for You to Screw Up

"If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!" - Matthew 7:11
One of the best things about having a son is the way God uses that relationship to speak to me about His role as my father. He has shown me a lot lately about what a good father He is, and how I have needed a shift in perspective.

The other day, in the middle of dealing with a discipline issue with my toddler, I felt that God was also dealing with me.

Sometimes my perspective (and many others' perspectives) of God is that He is just waiting, watching, holding a big ol' lightning "rod of correction" for the next time one of His children gets out of line. In my head I have come to understand that this is not the case. But, my heart usually takes longer to get things like this. Well, experience really is the best teacher, and God was again speaking to me through my relationship with my son.

As a father I am never just waiting for my son to screw up. I think the WORLD about him. I LOVE him. I can't wait to wake up to his loud "I'm awake!" announcement every morning when he barges into our room. I LOVE coming to "rescue" him in the middle of the night when he needs some water or loses his paci. When he is playing with his cars (which is all the time) I love watching him figure things out and use his imagination. I am so stinkin' PROUD of that boy. I never am just waiting for him to make a wrong move. In fact, I'd say the opposite is true. I am watching, waiting, holding a REWARD for the next time he does something right.

I believe God is the same way.

He is a proud parent. He loves coming to our rescue. He loves hearing our voices every morning. He loves to give good gifts to His children. He waits, and watches, holding a reward for when he "catches" us doing something right.

If you're like me, that is a huge paradigm shift. And if we can take this to heart, we will be infinitely more happy and much more confident in God's unending love for us.

Yes, that love is where discipline and correction comes from. Yet, there is so much more to our relationship with Him. There is so much more to God's love.

My prayer is that we would learn what it means to be sons and daughters of our Father in Heaven.

To be able to walk boldly in His love. To rest securely in His peace. To live every day understanding just how stinkin' proud He is. To live in an expectancy for the next good thing He has for us.
