"Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience." Colossians 3:12

Every singer, musician, and communicator is encouraged to understand the importance of bringing glory to God when they are OFF the stage. We aim to make worship a lifestyle, not just a 20-minute set of songs at the beginning of weekend services.

One big way I think the Church can worship God is the way we love people. Specifically, the way we care for the brokenhearted and grieving.

Today is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day. You might not have heard about it because people are generally uncomfortable talking and hearing about death, much less the death of a child. And people grieve in so many different ways it is difficult to know what to say or how to help.

However, if you are a part of the Church, it is about time you get uncomfortable. Contrary to some Americanized teachings of the Bible, Jesus did not come to give us a life of safety and comfort. I believe that we are called to go into awkward situations and be a light. And speak life. And just love people. Whatever their mess is. However awkward their situation.

Perhaps you know a mother who has a child in heaven. One in four women have experienced the loss of their baby, so I'm sure you do know someone. There is a very large community of men and women who have experienced the loss of their babies. Many who are in need of an encouraging word or just someone to ask them how they're doing.

When my wife and I lost our baby in September of 2011 a few friends/family came and visited us in the hospital and that meant the world to us. I know it wasn't a fun time for them, but they loved us well.

Especially for a worship leader, ministry is sometimes glamorous and fun and uplifting. And there is certainly a place for that. Yet, if we do not love people outside of church, during the difficult times, our Sunday morning worship is empty. We can sing all day long about being the hands and feet of Jesus, but if those hands and feet never get dirty, we miss out on a more meaningful and powerful worship experience.

So, who do you know that may need a tender word, or a gentle conversation? How can you show kindness to the brokenhearted around you? How can you love God by loving people? Since we are God's chosen people, let's clothe ourselves with mercy and gentleness and kindness and patience and humility. Let's put these things into action. This is true worship.
