Humble

The other day I had the privilege of serving alongside some worship-leader friends, evaluating some new musicians, singers, and potential worship leaders. Our church's "Groomsmen" process allows for people to audition, get evaluated, and get training so that they can be plugged-in to serve in the various ministries we have. More than finding talented musicians and singers this process is designed to see where people are at in their walk with God and help them grow as disciples of Jesus.

One of the best auditions we saw was not because of the individual's talent or abilities, but because of how humble she was.

True humility really is an attractive quality. As we were getting to know this woman, it was evident that she possessed a true spirit of humility. These are a few thoughts I had about humble people:

1. Humble people are servants.
We asked each person who auditioned why they were interested in being a part of the worship team. It can be a difficult question to answer, and we heard many different answers, but the best answer we heard was centered around serving. It takes true humility to serve others, voluntarily, with no pay or reward.

2. Humble people are selfless.
A servant heart is a selfless heart. By definition, to be humble means to put others before yourself. To deny your self. To be selfless. Esteeming others above yourself is not a new concept. Paul talked about this in his letter to the church of Philippi (Phil 2:3). And the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross was the ultimate picture of selflessness and humility.

3. Humble people are steady.
The more we rely on our own abilities and talents, the more likely we will fall. Pride gives us a false sense of stability. If our footing is in ourselves, we will fail. But, humbly placing our confidence and trust in Jesus gives us a firm foundation. In Christ alone we are steady and stable. It takes true humility to recognize our need for Jesus every day and in every moment.

This C.S. Lewis quote says it well: "Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less."

That is at the heart of it. Steady, selfless servants possess true humility because they put Jesus first, others second, and themselves last.

This is especially important for those who are in positions of leadership. Specifically, worship leaders. And I have to keep pride in check every time I walk onto the platform to lead worship.

I am thankful for the people I meet who are humble. It is humbling.

And I believe that the more humble I am, the closer I get to God. That is the ultimate goal.
